10 Water Safety Tips Everyone Should Know!

  1. Ensure everyone in your family can swim well. A quick google search is all it takes to find swim lessons near you. Until they’re experienced, make sure all swimmers wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets around water.41130P_160_act
  2. Use the buddy system! Never let anyone swim alone. Swimming is more fun with a friend anyways!
  3. Post “family pool rules” and make sure everyone knows what they are. There are great lists to get you started!
  4. Make sure at least one responsible adult is designated to supervise kids at all times around water – even if lifeguards are present.
  5. Prevent unsupervised access to the water – restrict access to the pool with safety covers and barriers and make sure kids ask if it’s ok before going swimming.
  6. If you have a home pool, make sure to maintain proper chemical levels, circulation and filtration. Improper chemical levels can increase the risk of earaches, rashes or more serious diseases.
  7. Protect your whole body – make sure to wear sunscreen whenever you’re out in the sun (even if you “never burn”) and drink plenty of water.
  8. Be aware of how different the beach is from the pool, like the presence of rip currents. If you’re caught in a rip current, stay calm. Swim parallel to the shore and once you are free, turn and swim toward the beach.
  9. Keep a lookout for aquatic life – water plants and animals can be dangerous. Dark blue and purple flags mean dangerous marine life like sharks and jellyfish.
  10. There are two things you should always have nearby while swimming – a cell phone and a first-aid kit. Better to be safe than sorry!
