Third Annual Campaign Will Educate Parents and Children about Water Safety and the Benefits of Learning to Swim

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — (BUSINESS WIRE)–Swimways Corp., a leader in the recreational water products marketplace and creator of the SwimWays®Swim Steps™ program that helps kids learn to swim, announced today the campaign for its third annual ‘National Learn to Swim Day,’ taking place on Saturday, May 17, 2014. Dedicated to educating parents and children about water safety, National Learn to Swim Day is an opportunity for families to learn about the importance and benefits of learning to swim before Memorial Day Weekend and the start of summer.

On May 17th, Swimways encourages families nationwide to participate in National Learn to Swim Day in their own way – by enrolling children in local swimming instructions, hosting group swimming lessons, or discovering the tools that Swimways provides families, including its Swim Steps learn-to-swim program and online water safety resources available on Swimways’ dedicated Swim Steps website www.TeachMeToSwim.com. Families can get involved by downloading an event poster, swimming tips, coloring sheets and accomplishment certificates on the dedicated site.

“Summertime wouldn’t be complete without swimming, it’s an activity that children worldwide enjoy throughout the season,” says Monica Jones, marketing director, Swimways. “It’s essential that children learn the fundamentals of this invaluable life skill at an early age. We are so excited to continue to raise awareness about the importance of teaching children how to swim and to help promote water safety so that families can enjoy a safe and fun summer.”

SwimWays’ Swim Steps program is a three-step program that features colorful swim-training aids specially designed to help parents teach kids to swim at home. The first step of the program is designed to introduce and comfortably support babies in the water; step two products give children the ability and freedom to explore as they develop confidence and learn to balance and paddle (two important pre-swimming skills); and step three products provide graduated support, helping kids to feel empowered and confident as they strengthen and perfect their swimming skills.

Families can learn more about National Learn to Swim Day and Swim Steps by visiting www.Swimways.com and www.TeachMeToSwim.com.

You asked, I answered – Choosing Flotation for Kids and Adults

by Mario Vittone

Mario VittoneSwimWays asked “What questions do you have for Mario?” and you answered! Not surprisingly, Swimways fans asked about flotation. Questions about pool floats and life jackets are very common, especially from parents.  So long as you understand that there are two sides to the answers – safety versus fun – you’ll be able to make good choices for your family on flotation devices for use in all bodies of water.

You see, as a serious advocate of water safety, I’m a big fan of life jackets. As a serious advocate of fun, I’m a big fan of pool floats – they are not the same thing.  You can learn more about that difference in a previous blog post, but for now, on to your questions. Continue reading

Treat Mom to a Poolside Garden Brunch This Mother’s Day

Mother's Day Brunch Ideas

Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 11 which, coincidentally, is about the time many of us open our pools for the season and have gardens bursting with their first blooms! So, it’s the perfect time to celebrate Mom with a pretty, poolside garden brunch! After all, where would we be without moms? I think you know where! Half of us would be dead since we jumped off cliffs just because our friends did or because we were denied life-saving medical procedures after getting ourselves in car accidents without having good, clean underwear on! Thanks to moms, everyone knows surgeons will deny life-saving surgery to anyone not wearing good, clean underwear! (Of course, I often wonder how underwear stays “good” and “clean” after a terrible accident.)

Yes, without moms, we’d be in big trouble! So let’s thank all the mothers in our lives – grandmothers, aunts, special friends and neighbors – by giving them a special, EASY celebration! Remember, the name of this page is “Relax.” Even if you’ve never boiled water or tied a bow, you can put together this delicious, gorgeous party! Even the youngest members of the family can help!

This year, show mom you’re grateful you have the good sense not to jump off cliffs and to wear good, clean underwear by honoring her with a special garden brunch she’ll be especially thankful for!

Mother’s Day Poolside Garden Brunch: Set the Scene

by Tracy Kunzler

From the editor: What better way to enjoy Mother’s Day than being poolside enjoying crisp, fresh spring air? Check out these mom-pleasing decor ideas from our relaxation expert,

While it may still be a tad chilly to jump in the pool, it’s the perfect time to dine poolside, taking in the beauty of spring. Picture this: a beautifully decorated table alongside your newly-opened pool turned into a “garden pond” with the Mother’s Day gift of pretty, floating lotus lights, swimming fish and lily pads! Here’s how to easily set the scene:

Turn your pool into a pond

Decorate your pool with floating flower decor, or motorized swimming fish! Mom will also love receiving them as a gift and using them all season long.

Complete the pool-as-pond setting with some large, floating lily pads cut from green fun foam you can buy inexpensively at craft stores like Michael’s and A.C. Moore. This is a fun activity for the younger members of the family. Place small toy frogs on them for extra charm!

Don’t forget to have mom’s favorite music playing on a portable music player. You could even borrow some CDs of classical music or nature sounds from the local library for a soothing acoustical backdrop!

Create a tablescape that doubles as a garden

Even if you have very few flowers blooming in your yard on Mother’s Day, no worries! You’ll have a table bursting with blooms with this fun, easy and inexpensive table setting!

First, cover your table with a length of artificial grass which can be found at stores like Walmart, Home Depot and Lowe’s. Decorate it with flowers from your local dollar store. Add accents from around the house and garden like garden gnomes, toy frogs and turtles, or artificial birds, nests and butterflies from the local craft store. Put flowers in a watering can in the middle of the table for a centerpiece. Voilà! A beautiful garden for mom!
