Take Me Out to the Backyard Ball Game
Here’s how to “cover the bases” for a celebration sure to make a home run with the dad who loves baseball.
Set the mood
Have everyone dress in the colors of dad’s favorite team or wear team jerseys and ball caps. Put the game on TV. Or, play baseball stadium sound effects and music. An album titled “Stadium Organists: Baseballs Greatest Hits” is available on amazon.com for $13.99 for the album or just .89 cents a cut and is chock full of music and sound effects perfect for a baseball-themed party. You can even sample before you buy. You could also check your local library for ballpark theme music CD’s.
Dad’s Root Beer or other favorite “Pop”. Check here for stores carrying Dad’s Root Beer.
Serve traditional ballpark favorites like “Pop” corn, peanuts in the shell, and boxes of Cracker Jacks.
“Top Dog” hot dog bar
For many dads, it’s not a meal unless a significant part of it once wore hooves. So a hot dog bar with all the fixings makes perfect sense for a baseball theme Father’s Day celebration! Grill up a bunch of hot dogs and warm some hot dog buns. Set these up at the beginning of a hot dog bar that includes toppings like:
- Jalapeno slices
- A variety of mustards
- Shredded cheese
- Diced onion
- Chopped bacon
- Banana peppers
- Diced tomato
Let everyone customize a dog (or three) just the way they like it. You could even award distinctions like “most creative dog,” “most unusual dog,” “most tricked-out dog,” etc. We found this impressive set up of a hot dog bar on the blog “Life With Fingerprints.”
Baseball park ice cream novelties and candies
Get a variety of candies like Sugar “Daddies,” Baby Ruth bars and cotton candy or ice cream novelties such as “pop” ice, Nutty Buddy cones, or Strawberry Shortcake ice cream bars – whatever dad’s favorites are.
Take a break from watching the game on TV to play ball – a game of wiffle ball – in the backyard. You can find wiffle balls and bats at most toy or department stores. Do you have little ones and a variety of skill levels in your family? With this great Hydro Catch set from COOP, all members of the family can enjoy a game of catch regardless of their age or skill level. Hook and loop fabric on the inside of the round mitts “snags” the ball at almost any angle and a strap on the outside to slip your hand under makes for a secure fit. All pieces even float if you want to take the game to the pool or surf-side! The set makes a great Father’s Day gift, too! Find Hydro Catch sets in a variety of colors at many mass retail stores or online here.
Gift ideas for the baseball-loving dad include tickets to a ball game, a jersey or ball cap with the logo of his favorite team, or a subscription to a sports magazine. However you choose to celebrate dad, just make sure he knows how much you appreciate all he does for the family all year – especially serving as #1 spider hit man!
