Give Dad the Gift He Really Wants This Father’s Day

Dad’s Day at the “Beach”

Is your dad more of a beach bum? Bring the beach to the backyard and save dad the trouble of packing up, parking and unloading the car with this fun backyard “beach” party!

Set the scene

Toss out the beach chairs, a beach umbrella and play beach-inspired music that best suits your dad: Beach Boys, Bob Marley, Jimmy Buffet, or steel drum Caribbean. (Your local library often has music CDs you can check out for free, or you can download music from iTunes.) Fill a beach bucket with ice and a couple of dad’s favorite drinks to place at his seat. Local “dollar stores” are great sources for sand pails and other beach decorations. You could also get a plastic wading pool and fill it with bags of sand from the local hardware store so little ones can sit in it and make sandcastles. If you have a pool, toss in a swimming Rainbow Reef Turtle (head actually bobs as he swims!) and a couple of Rainbow Reef Mini Fish with realistic swimming action! (These can also double as fun Father’s Day gifts!) Both are found at stores across the country or online here. Rainbow Reef Turtles

Menu

Drink Coconuts

Serve dad’s favorite drink in a coconut cup with straw and little paper umbrella. Party City, for example, sells real coconut cups for $2.99 each, as well as lots of beach party decorations.

Vitamin “Sea” Fruit Plate

Try this fun presentation for a fruit plate we found on announcingit.com. Use kiwi slices as palm leaves, chunks of banana as palm tree trunks and clementine or tangerine sections as “sand.”

Fish tacos

You can use your own recipe for your favorite fish tacos or this favorite recipe from Trader Joe’s:

  • Small tortillas
  • Trader Joe’s frozen Fish Nuggets (any frozen fish nuggets)
  • Shredded cabbage
  • Trader Joe’s Cilantro Dressing (found chilled in their produce section)

Cook the fish per package directions. Mix cabbage with desired amount of dressing. Place several nuggets on each tortilla with some of the dressed cabbage and that’s it! If you like, serve with condiments like Pico de Gallo, chopped avocado and shredded cheese.

Sand dollar cookies

We love this idea from family.go.com. Just grab some slice-and-bake peanut butter or sugar cookie dough and bake per package directions. Decorate with a thin coat of white icing and place slivered almonds and chocolate sprinkles in a sand dollar pattern as shown.

Activities

Backyard Volleyball Game

Here’s a game everyone can have fun playing no matter what their age or skill level: Volleyball! If you have a pool, SwimWays has a Poolside Volleyball game complete with a net that spans your average pool size. All you have to do is set-up the game and you’re good to go! Or simply pick up a COOP Hydro Volleyball to play with in the backyard. An added bonus? COOP’s cool beach-inspired graphics add to the decor so you’ll have even less decorating to do for Dad – score!

COOP Hydro Smash

Paddle Ball

Paddle ball is a classic surf-side game. If you don’t already own a paddle ball game, COOP offers a great Hydro Smash set available at a variety of stores, or you can find it online here.
